Celebrating the Growth of Food Forests: Congratulations Pines Beach!

We’d like to send a huge congratulations to the Pines Beach community on the exciting announcement of their upcoming food forest! It’s inspiring to see another community-led initiative taking root right here in North Canterbury. A recent article shared the news of this project, which will transform unused land into a thriving edible space—designed to bring people together and nourish both community and whenua. This is a beautiful example of what’s possible when locals come together with a shared vision of sustainability, kai resilience, and connection.

As the Kaiapoi Food Forest whānau, we know just how powerful these spaces can be. We look forward to seeing the Pines Beach food forest grow and flourish, and we’re always here to support and celebrate each other on this journey!

Autumn in the Food Forest: A Time for Rest and Renewal

While our food forest might look a little bare right now—with fallen leaves and sleepy branches—autumn and winter is a crucial season in the life of a food forest. This is a time of rest and preparation. It’s also the perfect season for pruning fruit trees, assessing plant health, tidying up, and focusing on those often overlooked but vital maintenance tasks.

You’ll find the forest quieter, but still alive—with fungi doing their underground work, perennials storing energy, and the soil absorbing nutrients for spring. Don’t be discouraged by the slightly “sleepy” look of things—this is nature’s way of restoring balance and preparing for a vibrant spring.

Come Get Involved - Volunteer Mondays & Upcoming Workshops

If you’re keen to lend a hand, learn, or just get outdoors, we’d love to see you at our weekly Volunteer Mondays from 9:30am to 12:30pm. These sessions are a great way to connect with the land, contribute to your community, and meet like-minded people. All skill levels are welcome—there’s always something to do, even in winter!

We also have some great workshops and events coming up:

July 19th – Fruit Tree Pruning & Scion Collecting Workshop

Learn how to properly prune your fruit trees for health and productivity, and how to collect scion wood for grafting.

August 16th – Tree Tapping Workshop

Explore the art of tapping trees for sap—an ancient and sustainable practice that can be used for a variety of native and introduced species in Aotearoa.

Make sure you’re following us for updates, registration details, and more info on how to get involved!

Here’s to warm gloves, sharp secateurs, and growing community connections this winter season.
